3rd Graders at Centennial got to explore new technology devices in the Innovation Lab.

A Note from the Principal:

Dear Parents/Guardians,

On Late Start, February 5th, Centennial will be hosting a Global Day of Play!

We believe that unstructured play is essential for children’s development, fostering creativity, problem-solving skills, and social-emotional well-being. Unstructured play allows children to explore their imaginations, develop social skills through interaction with others, and learn valuable life lessons through trial and error. To raise awareness about the importance of play, we will be dedicating a portion of the school day to free play activities.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Global Day of Play: Students will have the opportunity to engage in free play activities throughout the day, both indoors and outdoors (weather permitting). Teachers will be actively participating in the play activities with their students.

Guidelines for Student Participation:

  • Students may bring toys from home, as long as they are:
    • Safe and non-dangerous
    • Do not require batteries or electricity (no electronic devices)
    • Do not simulate weapons
  • Some suggested toys include: board games, dolls, Legos, blocks, trucks, cars, race tracks, playing cards, empty cardboard boxes, markers, jigsaw puzzles, and items for social games (charades, Pictionary, etc.)
  • Please note that we cannot be responsible for lost or stolen items. We recommend keeping special toys at home.

We encourage you to discuss the importance of play with your child, and help them choose a few toys to bring to school.

We look forward to a fun and engaging Global Day of Play!

Sincerely,

Jenn Byxbe

Principal

Changes coming to drop-off and pick-up

Hi Centennial Elementary Families!

We understand that traffic congestion during pick up and drop off can be unpredictable.  In an effort to improve the efficiency of traffic flow during these busy times, Centennial and Firestone Police have partnered to make specific adjustments.  If followed appropriately, these changes will facilitate better access for first responders, improve traffic flow, and ultimately lead to a smooth and safe experience for our students and their families.  The following changes will be implemented on Monday, January 27th, 2025

  • PRIOR to Arrival/Dismissal:
    • Most of the traffic issues our community is experiencing is due to the number of vehicles parked along, and on, Neighbor’s Parkway well in advance of dismissal.  As a result, neighborhood residents and first responders cannot access portions of the neighborhood due to restricted traffic flow.  Firestone PD is asking parents to honor the “10 Minute Parking Lane”.  Parents who wish to arrive early may park in the neighborhood as long as they do not block anyone’s driveway, a fire hydrant, or park too close to a stop sign.
    • Vehicles cannot be stopped or parked on Neighbor’s Parkway prior to dismissal.  Specifically, vehicles traveling from the west cannot be stopped on Neighbor’s Parkway attempting to turn left into the driveline. Therefore, the best way to enter the driveline into the school is from the east.
    • If you’re coming from the west and can’t immediately turn into the drop-off/pick-up lane, no worries! You have a few options: You can circle around and approach from the east, or you can park and walk to the school. When parking, please be mindful of our neighbors by not blocking driveways and keeping a safe distance from fire hydrants and stop signs.
    • When using the drop-off/pick-up line, please remember that this is a “Kiss ‘n Go” lane. Students need to be ready to jump out/in quickly and there is NO PARKING or stopping for an extended time in this particular lane.
  • AFTER Arrival/Dismissal:
    • When exiting the school parking lot during drop-off and pick-up times, it will now be a right turn only lane onto Neighbors Parkway towards Birch St. If you live in the Neighbors Point community, you can use Bluegrass Street to loop back to Briarwood Street to the east, or you can exit onto Birch Street and return to the community via Sable Avenue.

Ultimately, traffic flows smoothly after dismissal.  As a result, we’re asking for your cooperation in waiting until it’s closer to, or soon after, dismissal time to pick up your student. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and efficient traffic process for all our students. By working together, we can ensure everyone gets home safely and on time! Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Jenn Byxbe- Principal & Luke Dunker- SRO- Firestone PD

Cold Weather…Brrrrrrrrrr

As we are heading into this season when we may have some days with colder weather, please be sure to help your child be most successful.

  • If the weather feels like 20 degrees or below, we will have indoor recesses.
  • Have your child bring a warm coat and hat/gloves as needed.
  • We ask that students have snow pants and boots if they would like to play in the field when there is snow on the ground.
  • Our school district and school will communicate with our community if we have weather that requires us to move from in-person learning to an online learning day.

Lost and Found

Students, your stuff misses YOU too! So many lost coats are looking for their homes. Please take a moment to stop by the Lost and Found area to check for your missing things!
